"oh, gawd how could you, bloodberryjam?!" yes, yes, i know what you're thinking. why in the hell would i bother to contribute to the myriad of sailor moon pages out there? well, because i liked the show at one point. in fact, after seeing vampire d, it was this poorly dubbed anime that kept me hooked on anime, so you have to give it some credit. and though it's popularity eventually killed it for me [with the coming of new episodes and such], i always enjoyed watching the very first episodes of the original sailor moon, back when things were simple and queen beryl was the ultimate threath. good memories indeed. - bloodberryjam

... story ...

serena's you're average gurly school girl. she's whiny, clutzy, and spends more time studying boys than she does her own homework. she's also a spineless crybaby, but one day she manages to show some backbone by saving a cat from a group of mischievous boys. as it turns out the cat's name is luna and she can talk! not only that, but she's a gaurdian of the moon kingdom who was sent to reunite the sailor soldiers [they're called scouts, but i like the term soldiers better]. serena doesn't know it yet, but she's actually sailor moon, the "leader" of the soldiers and sworn enemy of the negaverse. now with the help of luna and the mysterious tuxedo mask, serena has to find the sailor soldiers, the seven rainbow crystals, and the moon princess while battling the generals from the negaverse and all their twisted schemes.

... good guys ...

serena [sailor moon]. though her position as leader is often questioned by the other soliders, especially mars, she manages to prove herself worthy despite her clumsy, crybaby, absent-minded ways. she has enough trouble keeping up with her normal life and is often inclined to put her responsibilities as a sailor solider last.
attacks:
"moon tiara magic!" [turns her tiara into a magic disk that destroys the enemy on contact]
"moon healing activation!" [with the use of her wand, it turns a shadow warrior back to their human form]

amy [sailor mercury]. the "brains" of the operation. she's the only scout with a mini computer [probably because she's the only one who knows how to utilize it] and a pretty level head. she's considered to be a genius by her peers and has no problem keeping up with her responsibilities as a student and sailor solider.
attack:
"mercury bubble blast!" [produces a fog screen effect that impairs the vision of the enemy, more of a defensive manuver than an attack, but oh well ... ]

raye [sailor mars]. with a fiery personality, she's always arguing with serena and putting her down. she's a temple priestess and is able to use her charms and spells to deal with evil spirits even when she's not in her sailor solider form. though she feels she'd be a better leader than serena, she has confidence in serena's ability.
attack:
"mars fire ignite!" [blasts the enemy with a fireball]

lita [sailor jupiter]. the "karate maniac" tomboy. though she's one tough girl, she's a got a knack for cooking and going ballistic over every cute guy she sees. of all the soldiers, she always stands up for serena in her absence and points out her good qualities [though they are scarce and few]. despite her soft side, she's a fighter first and foremost when it comes to being a sailor soldier.
attack:
"jupiter thunder blast!" [blasts the enemy with a thunder bolt]

mina [sailor venus]. if you overlook her natural grace and knack for leadership, she could easily pass for serena's twin. before she met the other soldiers, she was already fighting crime under the guise of sailor v [whom all the soldiers idolized] with the help of her guardian cat, artemis. not much is known about her since she appears just before the moon princess is found.
attack:
"venus beam smash" [smashes the enemy with a beam of light]

darien [tuxedo mask]. as darien, he's just your average jerk who lives to pick on serena, but once he's called upon as tuxedo mask, he puts his life on hold to help sailor moon and the other sailor soldiers in their fight against the negaverse. though he seems to be on the side of the sailor soldiers, he develops his own agenda when it comes to finding moon crystals.
attack:
um ... he really just distracts the enemy by throwing a rose with a sharpened stem in their path and then gives a lil' "you can do it, sailor scouts!" speech ...

luna [black cat]. one of the two moon gaurdians sent to earth to help reunite the sailor soldiers. not only can she talk, but she's also able to pull different items out of gawd-knows-where by doing a flip in the air. she gathers information for the soldiers through a game machine in the local arcade and acts as serena's mentor.

artemis [white cat]. the other moon gaurdian who was sent to earth. he acts as mina's gaurdian and is extremely proud of her experience over the other soldiers. before he and sailor venus met with the other sailor soldiers, he was the voice in the game machine that informed luna of negaverse activities on earth.

... bad guys ...

jedite. the first negaverse general to threaten the earth with his lame attempts to steal energy. he nearly destroyed the soldiers, but failed and was thus punished by being eternally frozen by queen beryl.

nephite. because he lived on earth under the guise of maxfield stanton, he was able to steal the heart of serena's best friend, molly. he was more sophisticated than jedite in terms of stealing energy since he used the pattern of the starts, rather than cheap schemes. however, somewhere along the way, nephlite began to get soft and was killed by zoycite through orders of queen beryl.

zoycite. after destroying nephlite, she took his place as the new threath to the earth. only now, she has a new mission ... find the seven rainbow crystals and bring the shadow warriors trapped inside them back to the negaverse.

malachite. zoycite's buddy and maybe something more. when zoycite dies he promises to get revenge on the sailor soldiers with the help of his glow-y boomerang looking thingies ...

shadow warriors. the seven rainbow crystals are kept inside ordinary people and animals and once they're removed, the holder of the crystal retakes its form as a shadow warrior.

evil prince darien. after being injured, darien is taken back to the negaverse to be healed and brainwashed. he then becomes a loyal, mindless servant of queen beryl.

gloom and doom sisters. the monsters responsible for the death of the sailor soldiers, minus sailor moon just before she faces off with queen beryl.

queen beryl. ruler of the negaverse and the mastermind behind the plot to destroy earth. she doesn't seem to have much faith in her generals, but she doesn't want to do the job herself unless she absolutely has to.

... others ...

molly. though she doesn't know of serena's sailor soldier identity, she's her best friend. she falls in love with maxfield stanton [nephlite] and puts serena in dilemma as she forces her friend to choose between being sailor moon and destroying nephlite and being a friend and allowing molly to pursue her happiness.

melvin. just your average nerd who has a crush on serena. he tends to babble on about nothing, but every once in a while he blursts out something that proves to be helpful.

... more insight ...

just for the record, i am well aware that the sailormoon manga by naoka takeuchi is the basis for the anime [give me some credit, i'm not a "moonie"], including all the complications mentioned and then some. i'm just commenting on the dubbed sailor moon [so don't try to get smart with me, bud!]

yes, like many others, i loved sailor moon and up till now i still enjoy watching the original episodes i recorded because, well, quite frankly, they make me feel better for some reason. who knows why or how, but they just do. i first heard about sailor moon when i was in the sixth grade. one of my friends was completely addicted to the show and it wasn't long before the drug took hold on me. i mean the characters were so pretty and there was a talking cat and y'know other cool stuff that didn't really make any sense at all, but i was too young and naive to really give a care. it was just cool at the time and that's all that mattered. though some episodes were painfully predictable and i got sick of seeing the prissy transformation and attack sequences in every episode, i eventually became content with the incredibly easy to follow series which revolved around five teenage girls who fought to defeat the evil negaverse and save the earth.

then somehow it went all soap opera-y on me with the sailor moon r series [what? didn't they just lose their memories?]. though those episodes were pretty cool and gave more insight on the sailor soldiers, i couldn't help thinking that i would have enjoyed sailor moon a lot more if they had just kept it to the simple "we kicked queen beryl's ass the end" deal. and then when i learned that there was still more to come with renee, the other sailor soldiers, and the whole time travel deal, well, that's when i decided to live in my own happy "original sailor moon episodes" world. it was just getting too complicated and messy and i just couldn't deal with a series like that. and of course later on, it's own popularity and the overflow of "moonies" who had no idea what the hell they were talking about sent it to its grave for many long time fans like myself.

overall. i eventually got completely sick of seeing sailor moon's transfomation and attack sequences that took forever and a day to complete, but for the most part, my favorite episode was the last one where queen beryl got her butt kicked! probably because beryl reminds me of my fourth grade teacher [an old broad who thought she had to show off her body by wearing not-so flattering outfits].
